Why Elected Officials Don't Want Town Status

It seems pretty clear from your lead story "Township Plan hits a roadblock" that our elected officials will find any excuse not to support Reston independence.
What incumbents ever want to vote for more competition?
Town status would create locally elected officials who are all future competition for county supervisor, state legislature and even Congress.
It is like asking incumbents to reform gerrymandering. No profiles in courage here. If any elected official really believe in independence for Reston, he/she would not find all these excuses and would instead become our champion.
