RCA, legislators meet on town issue
After a rally held to thank volunteers on Oct. 22, the Reston Citizens Association was expected to have a more work-oriented meeting with local elected officials Tuesday, Oct. 30, to plead their case for a referendum on incorporating Reston as a town.
A petition that began in July 2005 has amassed 3,600 signatures. RCA members are hoping this will constitute a mandate for state Sen. Janet Howell (D-Reston) and Del. Ken Plum (D-Reston) to champion the cause in Richmond during next year's General Assembly session.
Not all of Reston's representatives were able to attend the Oct. 22 rally, so the Oct. 30 meeting was suggested as an alternative.
After a meeting held in November 2005, both Howell and Plum said they wanted to see more involvement from Reston organizations they said would be directly affected by incorporation, such as the Reston Association, Reston Town Center, Reston Community Center and the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce.
In a release earlier this month, Plum said that request had still not been satisfied.
RCA President Mike Corrigan has called that request a catch-22 because he does not believe those organizations will become involved before a referendum is approved.
The agenda for Tuesday night's meeting included a presentation of the petition signatures, the proposed legislation and a response to concerns, the proposed services of a town, a financial analysis, the relationship of current Reston organizations to the proposal, and the relationship between the county and the town in the proposal.
