Newcomer: Plaka Grill

When someone suggests you try a “great, new Greek place” in Vienna, do it. This is “quick,” not “fast” food, ordered at the counter, cooked, then served quickly and efficiently at your table.

As a start, try the tzatziki, hummus, gyros, souvlaki and bifteki, or maybe the daily special. The tzatziki, for instance, is refreshing with a garlic bite, served with soft warm pieces of pita. The Plaka Gyro, an immense pita stuffed with slices of marinated pork, chunks of tomato, onion slices, French fries and tzatziki, is more than equal to the best of Mexican burritos.

Peter Drosos, the guiding hand behind Plaka Grill, may have trained in Greece but, born in Vienna and a graduate of Madison High School, his roots are local. His food is fresh, prepared to order and incredibly good -- a deliberate mix of traditional and modern Greek fare well worth trying.
